An oil refinery in Ukhta, in Russia’s Komi Republic, was reportedly struck in what local sources described as a drone attack, approximately 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) from the Ukrainian border. The Monitor Telegram channel reported on Thursday, Feb. 12, that the facility was hit, while the Russian Telegram channel Astra cited local residents as saying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeted the Lukoil-Ukhtaneftepererabotka refinery. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) said the local airport had been temporarily closed.

There was no immediate official confirmation from Russian authorities regarding damage to the refinery.

Separately, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses “intercepted and destroyed” 106 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles overnight across multiple regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Tambov and Nizhny Novgorod regions, as well as occupied Crimea, the Azov Sea and the Black Sea. The ministry did not mention Komi Republic in its statement.

Ukraine’s General Staff has not yet commented on the reported attacks.

Ukhta is located deep inside Russian territory, far from the front line of Russia’s war in Ukraine. If confirmed, the strike would mark one of the longest-range reported attacks on Russian energy infrastructure since the start of the full-scale invasion.

On Wednesday, Lukoil’s Volgograd oil refinery was damaged in an overnight drone attack. Local authorities confirmed a fire at a refinery in the city’s southern district, saying there were no casualties.

Ukraine hit a Russian ammo depot near Volgograd and a missile manufacturer in Tambov overnight, triggering fires, evacuations, and school closures.

The Telegram channel Astra, citing OSINT analysis of eyewitness footage, reported that the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka refinery in the Krasnoarmeysky District was struck and caught fire.

The facility is the largest oil refinery in the Volgograd Region and one of Lukoil’s key assets, processing more than 15 million tons of oil annually. It produces gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, fuel oil, bitumen, and other petroleum products.

Astra estimates this was at least the ninth attack on the refinery since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Later, Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed that the Volgogradsky refinery, which supplies the Russian military, had been hit.
