The former Little Mix star broke down in tears after her petition calling for SMA1 screening at birth officially passed 100,000 signatures on Friday, triggering a mandatory debate in the House of Commons. What began as a mother’s plea has now become a national conversation.

Jesy, 34, welcomed her twin daughters Ocean Jade and Story Monroe prematurely in May 2025 with her former partner Zion Foster. Months later, their world was shattered when both girls were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1), a rare and devastating genetic neuromuscular condition.

SMA1 causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting, and often leads to severe difficulties with breathing, swallowing and feeding — meaning many babies require feeding tubes and intensive daily medical care.

Since their diagnosis, Jesy has thrown herself into campaigning for change, urging the NHS to expand the routine newborn heel prick test to include screening for SMA1. She has repeatedly stressed that the test costs around £1 per baby — and believes earlier detection could have spared her daughters from irreversible damage.

Speaking previously, Jesy said early screening “could have saved [her twins’] legs” by allowing them to access treatment sooner.

On Friday, that fight reached an emotional peak.

Taking to Instagram, Jesy shared raw footage of herself surrounded by close friends as they anxiously watched the signature count climb. When the petition finally tipped over the 100,000 mark, the room erupted — cheers turning quickly into tears as the weight of the moment sank in. The total has since surged well beyond 120,000.

Alongside the video, a visibly emotional Jesy wrote:
“I cannot actually put into words how grateful I am that this moment has just happened right here! And it is all thanks to you guys.”

She later added:
“Thank you to every single person that took time out of their day to sign this petition. You have no idea how much this means to me and the SMA community. This is the first hurdle — but we bloody did it. And I truly believe that together we are going to make change!”

As her campaign gathers momentum, Jesy has also revealed that she has placed her music career firmly on hold.

Appearing on Heart FM’s Breakfast Show earlier this week, she told hosts Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston that her focus is now entirely on her daughters and the fight for their future.

“Look, listen — I’d never say never to music,” she admitted. “But for me, my girls are my main focus. I’ll be honest with you, I’ve not got time. I really don’t.

“They are my whole heart and soul. I want to continue advocating for them, getting this heel prick test changed, and getting them strong. That’s my main focus right now — because that’s what’s going to determine their future.”

Jesy has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of caring for two seriously ill babies, previously telling the Daily Mail that the medical procedures her daughters must undergo each day can feel unbearable.

She described the experience as an emotional rollercoaster — with some days feeling “really fing s” and others offering small moments of light.

Neither Jesy nor Zion ever expected to be navigating parenthood in this way, and she has admitted that providing constant medical care for the twins is a daily struggle that few can truly understand.

“Every day is so full-on,” she said. “I can speak about it, but I’ll never be able to explain how intense it is until you see it.”

Alongside her advocacy work, Jesy has also been reflecting on her past in her Prime Video documentary Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, where she opened up about the painful circumstances surrounding her departure from the band.

Despite the close bond she once shared with Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, Jesy revealed that following her abrupt exit — after a secret suicide attempt in 2020 — the relationships fractured.

She explained that legal complications meant her intention to leave was communicated by lawyers before she could speak to her bandmates herself, something she believes caused lasting damage.

“I feel mad that that was taken away from me,” she said. “I didn’t get the chance to explain why I couldn’t do it anymore.”

At the time, Jesy was due to appear in the final of Little Mix’s BBC show The Search, with host Chris Ramsey telling viewers she had “fallen ill.”

The singer recalled later attempts to reconnect, describing one final group phone call as “awkward” and painful — like “talking to strangers.”

“That was the last time I ever spoke to them as a group,” she admitted.

Now, however, Jesy’s focus is firmly forward-facing — driven by two tiny lives who have reshaped everything.

What started as heartbreak has become a mission. And as MPs prepare to debate SMA1 screening, Jesy Nelson’s tears on Friday marked not just relief — but the beginning of a fight that could change newborn care across the UK.
