Melanie Sykes has laid bare the most shocking health battle of her life, revealing she is now “two-thirds bald” and living in “constant pain” after being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition that has turned her world upside down.

The 55-year-old TV presenter  shared the emotional update in a candid Instagram video on Sunday, telling followers she has been unwell throughout the year and is battling severe inflammation across her body.

Wrapped up in a jumper, jacket, scarf and hat, Melanie spoke openly about her struggles while trying to remain hopeful, explaining that she has been forced to slow down and focus on healing.

“I’m not well, as you know,” she admitted. “I’ve been ill all year. I’ve got an autoimmune condition, I’m losing my hair, and I keep having crazy inflammation all over my body. I’m working on healing.”

The former Big Breakfast star added that she has been “living a very, very spiritual existence” as she searches for ways to cope with the physical and emotional toll of her illness. She encouraged followers to explore meditation, revealing she recently enrolled in a meditation teacher training course — although her health prevented her from completing the final days.

“In the last three months I’ve done a meditation teacher training course,” she said. “I was too ill to finish it — literally the last two days I couldn’t do. I don’t necessarily want to teach, but I can do the work for myself.”

Alongside the video, Melanie wrote:
“It’s been a while ❤️ I have ignited my YouTube channel again after a long period of learning, meditating and healing (this is ongoing). Remember I love you always.”

Earlier this year, Melanie also shared the painful reality of her hair loss, posting a side-profile image that showed a bald patch on her head while she was in London investigating her health issues.

At the time, she revealed she was experiencing alopecia and heart problems, which she believes were triggered by trauma, shock and medical mistreatment.

“I am experiencing alopecia and heart issues due to all that has happened over the last few months,” she explained. “PTSD, shock, mistreatment and malpractice.”

The mother-of-two did not hold back as she spoke about her experiences within the UK healthcare system, saying she felt let down during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life.

“This country must do better, and get better,” she said. “Our health services are utterly shocking — bar a few and rare decent humans who listen without prejudice and judgement.”

Melanie later went into further detail about the extent of her hair loss, explaining that she has lost inches from her hairline and now has only around half of her hair remaining. She also admitted she has been struggling with stress and insomnia alongside the physical symptoms.

Thankfully, she has since sought specialist help and confirmed that a scalp expert has reassured her her hair will grow back with treatment.

Born in Lancashire, Melanie first rose to fame in 1996 after appearing in a Boddingtons Bitter advert before launching a successful television career. She became a household name on The Big Breakfast in 1997 and later co-hosted Today with Des and Mel alongside the late Des O’Connor in 2002.

In 2014, she also appeared on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, finishing third behind X Factor singer Jake Quickenden.

Now, years after stepping away from the spotlight, Melanie is facing a battle far removed from television — one that has left her confronting her health, her past, and her resilience all at once.
